Nothing makes us happier than when a bride and groom choose to structure their wedding day around things they love – including things like brunch! Joy and Charles chose a mid morning ceremony time, followed by a brunch reception at the always beautiful venue, Vue on 30a. Their ceremony was moved to the terrace when rain set in, but it cleared by reception time to be a perfect day. Read more about Joy & Charles’ story here:
How did you two meet?
Charles and I met on Match.com, yes, match.com! He lives in Maryland and had set his search in GA because he wanted to move to Atlanta eventually. We chatted online and over the phone for about two months, then he flew to Atlanta where I lived and was doing my OBGYN residency. He took me on the most AMAZING first date, and I knew he was the one. After 5 years with lots of twists, turns, ups, downs, and many more fabulous dates later, he proposed.
How did he propose?
He always likes to try to catch me off guard, and his proposal was no exception. We had decided to go ahead and get married, and he had said he was going to propose in Spring 2018. So he’d planned for us to have dinner with his family, and I’d planned my dress, shoes, hair and makeup. I just KNEW that that would be “the moment,” and I wanted to look good for the cameras 😉 but the night before “the moment!”
We were sitting in the den like we often do. We’ve always been so cool together and can spend hours just being quiet and close by each other. He was watching the news or something, and I was reading an e-book. He rolled off his side of our sofa sectional and crawls over to me and says “I forgot to give you a hug when I got home” so I sat up and opened my arms, but instead or hugging me, he takes my hand and says “I haven’t been able to imagine my life without you since the day we met, will you marry me?” Now, I had traveled to Maryland to come home with a ring on it! But I was totally caught off guard and looking a HOT MESS in one of his huge T-shirts and yoga pants! Needless to say, there were no pics of the engagement!
Why did you choose 30a?
We wanted a small, intimate wedding at our favorite beach. The Destin/Seaside area is our favorite place to get away to, and we travel there 3-4 times a year. Charles wanted to get married with our “toes in the sand,” which didn’t quite work out with my designer shoe plans, but marriage is about compromise, right? So I went with it. One of my coworkers planned a wedding with her daughter near Destin about 2 years ago, and she had used Peach and Pearl Events. She put me in touch with Avis, who was Ah-mazing! I bought the “busy bride package” since I work about 80-100 hours a week in rural GA. So… Charles nor I actually saw the Vue on 30A until the day before the wedding!! Avis had a plan, a concept, and lots of contacts to make things happen. She even found a harpist who could play contemporary stuff. She introduced me to Rebecca at the Vue on 30A and Zhenia from Studio Petali, and they produced a FANTASTIC wedding in spite of the last minute changes due to a real-life thunderstorm that day. Even though our “toes in the sand” couldn’t happen (yes, I got to wear my shoes!!), we had a wonderful weekend full of family and friends that culminated with a magical Sunday morning wedding complete with a rainbow after the storm and a scrumptious brunch.
